Eva Castellanoz is a shining example of what is possible coming from a background of intense poverty and hardship. Born in Mexico of a mother who was an Otomí healer and a father of Aztec heritage, her family worked as migrant farm workers between Texas and Oregon. She has lived in Nyssa, Oregon since 1957 and has been a huge force for change in her community with her work teaching art as a tool for empowerment to young Latinos, her community activist work and her work as a curandera (traditional healer). Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Eva has the gift to rise above the tragedy and hardship that has been a part of her life, and she also has the gift of passing this ability on to others.
